Carnegie Mellon University, Associate Professor
Alessandro is an associate professor of information systems and public policy at the Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and a member of Carnegie Mellon CyLab. He is the co-director of CMU Center for Behavioral Decision Research (CBDR), and a member of the National Academies’ Committee on public response to alerts and warnings using social media and associated privacy considerations. He has held visiting positions at the Universities of Rome, Paris, and Freiburg ; Harvard University; and Microsoft Research.
Alessandro’s research investigates the economics of privacy. His studies have spearheaded the application of behavioral economics to the analysis of privacy and information security decision making, and the analysis of privacy risks and disclosure behavior in online social networks. Alessandro has been the recipient of the PET Award for Outstanding Research in Privacy Enhancing Technologies, the IBM Best Academic Privacy Faculty Award, multiple Best Paper awards, and the Heinz College School of Information’s Teaching Excellence Award.
Alessandro holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, and master degrees from UC Berkeley, the London School of Economics and Trinity College Dublin. While at Berkeley, he interned at Xerox PARC and Riacs, NASA Ames.
In a previous life, Alessandro worked as classical music producer and label manager and as freelance arranger, lyrics writer, and soundtrack composer for theatre, television, and independent cinema productions. He has raced a Yamaha TZ 125 motorcycle in the USGPRU national championship.

Jim is a business executive, entrepreneur and thought leader on big data, privacy, security and voting systems. He’s founded companies, defined vision and strategy, led teams, developed technology and built products. Most recently, Jim was vice president, data systems at inome and the first chief privacy officer at Intelius. Jim led the big data team that powers the company’s products as well as serving as its chief consumer advocate. Jim also currently serves on the Department of Homeland Security’s Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee.
Prior to inome and Intelius, Jim served as president and chief technology officer at Identity.net, an Internet company giving consumers control of their online identity and reputation. He was the founder and CEO of VoteHere, a pioneer in the development of private and secure electronic voting, both online and offline. He is a co-inventor of patents related to cryptographic voting and digital signatures.
Jim speaks publicly about big data and privacy. He’s testified before the U.S. Congress, Federal Trade Commission, National Institute of Standards and Technology, industry conferences and leading academic institutions. Jim has also served on the advisory boards of the Future of Privacy Forum and Helios Voting.
He received his bachelor’s degree with high honors in electrical engineering from the University of Florida and his master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, San Diego.

Joe is the founder and CEO of SwitchBook, a context management startup based in Santa Barbara, California.
Joe is the co-chair of the Information Sharing Work Group (ISWG) at the Kantara Initiative, working to define a technology, business and legal framework for giving individuals control over the data they share with vendors and online services. He is also the editor of the Standard Information Sharing Label specification, a project of the ISWG.

Linda is co-founder and CEO of Curious, Inc., a consumer platform for data gathering and discovery. Chris is the CEO of TRUSTe, the leading trustmark and recognized authority on Internet trust and privacy. Chris possesses over a decade of experience building online trust, most recently as senior vice president and general manager of VeriSign’s worldwide authentication services business, where he was responsible for strategy, sales, marketing, product and support.
Chris also previously managed VeriSign’s SSL and managed security services business. Federal Trade Commission
Laura Berger is a senior attorney in the division of privacy and identity protection at theFTC. She enforces federal laws that protect the privacy and security of consumers’ information and works on related policy matters, including the impact of emerging technologies on consumer privacy. In addition, she was author of the Commission’s Safeguards Rule, and has worked to develop educational materials to assist businesses to comply with that rule.
Previously, Laura was an attorney with the Office of the General Counsel at the FTC. While at the FTC, she also served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where she taught Women & the Law, among other courses. She received a bachelor’s degree cum laude from Tulane University and a juris doctorate cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School.
REPP, Co-founder and CEO
Michael started REPP after learning that his wife and co-founder tried to run a background check on him prior to their first date. Seeing the need for a better mechanism for personal information ownership, REPP was brought to life at The Brandery, a Top 15 Accelerator.
Michael has a successful history of product development, including creating and writing A.P. U.S. History Flashcards for Barron’s Educational Series. Prior to founding REPP, Michael worked at LPK, the world’s largest independent branding agency, for such clients as P&G and Kraft.

Rafae is a manager in the cyber security R&D group at Accenture Technology Labs. His primary expertise is around data security and privacy. In his current role, he is helping develop Labs’s strategic vision in this space for their clients worldwide. His research is focused on designing innovative solutions for security and privacy issues posed by emerging technology paradigms, in particular healthcare, cloud and mobile applications, and developing points of view and technology assets around them.
Prior to Accenture, he has worked at IBM Almaden Research Center and Oracle. His doctoral work has been cited by the OASIS industry consortium in connection with security standards such as RBAC and SAML. In other roles, he is also an author and part-time educator, and has a passion to share knowledge and engage with the community. He received a doctorate in computer engineering from Purdue University in 2006, and is also a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).

Peter is a widely recognized expert in bringing software products from idea to reality. Peter is currently general manager, cloud services platform at Intel Corporation, with previous stints in Microsoft and Trampoline Systems, a software startup in London, UK.
At Trampoline, Peter ran all product development and engineering efforts. His team built and shipped a social network visualization and analysis software which is used by the world’s largest ONA practice today. As the vice president of product strategy, David leads the development of Atigeo’s software products. Stowe Boyd has built an international reputation based on fooling around with social tools, and investigating their impact on media, business and society. Bant is the founder and CEO of Qnary. Before launching Qnary, Bant was the worldwide CEO of Interpublic’s global search and social agency Reprise Media.
Bant’s other professional positions include serving as president of global media agency Initiative. Joni is the Kantara Initiative executive director focusing on Trust Framework Identity Assurance and Interoperability Certification. Deeply embedded in privacy and identity standards for nearly a decade, Joni has provided guidance and support for varying technical and policy committees. Additionally, she has been a member or liaison to international industry standards committees including: OASIS SSTC, ISO SC27 WG5, and ITU-T SG17 Q6.
Recently, Joni has also been directly involved in the development and progress of the U.S. National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) efforts. She has served as the technical and operations director of the Liberty Alliance and is approaching a decade of service to the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (ISTO). AVG Technologies, VP, Privacy Products
Jim, vice president, privacy products at AVG Technologies, is responsible for delivering better privacy choices to AVG’s 150 million users worldwide. Jim joined AVG in the acquisition of PrivacyChoice, an independent developer of privacy technologies and services, which Jim founded in 2009. PrivacyChoice produced PrivacyFix, an innovative privacy dashboard to understand and control online privacy risk across social networks, search and tracking.

CDT, Director, Project on Consumer Privacy
Justin is the director for the Center for Democracy & Technology’s (CDT) Project on Consumer Privacy. He coordinates CDT’s advocacy on corporate collection, use and retention of personal information, including efforts to enact comprehensive privacy legislation in the United States and to strengthen privacy law in Europe. He has testified before House and Senate Committees on location privacy and data security, as well as the general need for stronger consumer privacy protections. He also leads CDT’s work on behavioral advertising and the development of a “Do Not Track” setting for web browsers, and serves as editor of the compliance specification in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standardization process.
Prior to joining CDT in January 2010, Justin was chief of the Internet Bureau of the New York Attorney General’s office. Under his leadership, the Internet Bureau was one of the most active and aggressive law enforcement groups working on internet issues, and he brought several groundbreaking cases to protect the rights of online consumers. He brought the first regulatory actions against spyware and adware companies, as well as against the advertisers who funded those companies.
He previously worked as a litigation associate for six years at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP in both its New York and Washington offices. He received his J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1998 and his bachelor’s degree in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia in 1995.

Natalie is the founder and CEO of Ansa. Natalie discovered her passion for entrepreneurship while studying engineering at the University of Colorado. M. Ryan Calo is Director of the Consumer Privacy Project at Stanford Law School. Prior to joining the law school in 2008, Mr. Calo was an associate at Covington & Burling, LLP, where he advised companies on issues of data security, privacy, and telecommunications.
Mr. Calo received his JD cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a contributing editor to the Michigan Law Review and symposium editor of the Journal of Law Reform, and his BA in Philosophy from Dartmouth College. In 2005-2006, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable R. Guy Cole Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Prior to law school, he was an investigator of allegations of police misconduct in New York City.

Kim Cameron is chief architect of identity in the identity and security division, where he works on establishing a user-centric identity architecture for the Internet, and ensuring Active Directory, Federation Services, Identity Lifecycle Manager, CardSpace and Microsoft’s other identity products become its leading implementations.
Kim joined the company in 1999 when Microsoft acquired ZOOMIT Corporation. As vice president of technology at ZOOMIT, he invented metadirectory technology and built the first shipping product. Before this, he led BCH Research Laboratories’ work on OSI-based messaging, directory and security, supplying software to telecoms and Global 500 corporations.
He grew up in Canada, attending King’s College at Dalhousie University and l’Université de Montréal. He has won a number of industry awards, including Digital Identity World’s Innovation Award (2005); Network Computing’s Top 25 Technology Drivers Award (1996) and MVP (Most Valuable Player) Award (2005); Network World’s 50 Most Powerful People in Networking (2005); Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Privacy Award (2007); Silicon.com’s Agenda Setters 2007; and the European Identity Awards (2008) for Best Innovation and Best Standard. Microsoft, Director of Privacy Strategy, Online Services Division
JC is a fifteen-year veteran of Microsoft, eleven of those years focused on privacy. He is currently director of privacy strategy for Microsoft’s Online Services Division. He works to ensure that consumers have more transparency and control over the data that is collected by Microsoft and how it is used by the Bing, MSN and Microsoft Advertising Divisions. He works with regulators, advocates, academics and industry privacy professionals to obtain feedback on current privacy issues and uses that feedback to help drive our privacy development process.
JC represents Microsoft on the W3C Tracking Protection Working Group. He also works with Microsoft privacy researchers to help integrate their work into future products and services. JC is author the book, Privacy: What Developers and IT Professionals Should Know.

Microsoft, Technical Privacy Manager for Xbox
Bethan is the technical privacy manager who conducts reviews of Xbox apps, products, and platform services in Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. She specializes in providing implementation guidance for customer-facing applications, titles, and services such as Kinect and Xbox for mobile in ways that both protect the customer and also meet the business need of the product group.
She has great passion for privacy and online safety, and has been working and volunteering in these areas for more than ten years . She is a member of Electronic Frontier Foundation and the ACLU.
Geoloqi, Co-founder and CEO
Amber Case is a cyborg anthropologist and user experience designer from Portland, Oregon. She has been featured in Forbes, WIRED, Time and many other publications, both in the United States and around the world. Her main focus is mobile software, augmented reality and data visualization, and reducing the amount of time and space it takes for people to connect. Case founded Geoloqi.com, a private location sharing application, out of a frustration with existing social protocols around text messaging and wayfinding.
Case has spoken at TED and SXSW on technology and humans and was featured in Fast Company 2010 as one of the Most Influential Women in Technology. She’s worked with Fortune 500 companies at Wieden+Kennedy and on major applications at Vertigo Software.

Federal Reserve Board, Chief Data Officer
Micheline is the Chief Data Officer of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System where she has responsibility for creating and implementing the Board’s enterprise data strategy. In that role, she heads the newly-created Office of the Chief Data Officer, which emphasizes the importance of the management of data and information as a major strategic priority for the Board. She also chairs the Board Data Council, a multi-disciplinary group consisting of senior officials from across the Board.
Prior to joining the Board, Micheline was principal at CDO, LLC, a boutique consultancy supporting the development of large-scale enterprise information management, data governance and data security strategic plans and implementation efforts. She was also the first state Chief Data Officer in the country, and part of the Governor’s Office in the State of Colorado.

Dr. Ann Cavoukian is recognized as one of the leading privacy experts in the world. An avowed believer in the role that technology can play in protecting privacy, Dr. Cavoukian’s leadership has seen her office develop a number of tools and procedures to ensure that privacy is protected in Ontario – and around the world.

Lorrie Faith Cranor
Carnegie Mellon University, Associate Professor
Lorrie is an associate professor of computer science and of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University where she is director of the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory (CUPS) and co-director of the MSIT-Privacy Engineering masters program. She is also a co-founder of Wombat Security Technologies, Inc.
She has authored over 100 research papers on online privacy, usable security, phishing, spam, electronic voting, anonymous publishing and other topics. She has played a key role in building the usable privacy and security research community, having co-edited the seminal book Security and Usability (O’Reilly 2005) and founded the Symposium On Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS). She also chaired the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) Specification Working Group at the W3C and authored the book Web Privacy with P3P (O’Reilly 2002).
She has served on a number of boards, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation board of directors, and on the editorial boards of several journals. In 2003, she was named one of the top 100 innovators 35 or younger by Technology Review magazine. She was previously a researcher at AT&T-Labs Research and taught in the Stern School of Business at New York University.

Todd is the vice president of global data content services at Acxiom. Todd joined Acxiom in 2000 and has served in multiple roles, including data product management, corporate strategy and consulting. In his current role, he works collaboratively with the world’s largest brands to identify high potential markets for global, consumer-centric growth programs, and identifies and secures consumer data for use in direct and digital marketing programs.
He previously led the company’s strategic merger and acquisition and alliances functions as well as competitive research and market analysis teams. For two years, he led Acxiom’s marketing strategy consulting practice. Marc invents mobile, social, media and personal data technologies that connect people, the web and the world. Jim Dempsey, vice president for public policy, has been with CDT since 1997. From 2003 to 2005, he served as executive director; he currently heads CDT West in San Francisco. Larry founded Janrain in 2005 to address the challenge of managing user identity on the Internet. ACLU of Washington, Privacy Counsel
Doug is privacy counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington. His original training is in computer science. He spent over 10 years in software development at Microsoft, where he was the lead developer for the first versions of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Money. He then shifted careers and received a J.D. degree from the University of Washington School of Law in 2002.
He combines his technology and legal backgrounds in work on privacy issues for the ACLU. Ladar is the founder of Lavabit. In 2004, he founded Nerdshack, LLC, a company that provided free anonymous email accounts to anyone. Over the next ten years, he expanded his business and renamed the company Lavabit LLC.

Eric Sachs has more than 15 years of experience in the areas of user identity and security for hosted Web applications. Ari Schwartz serves as the Senior Internet Policy Advisor for the NIST Information Technology Laboratory. He represents NIST on the Department of Commerce Internet Policy Task Force, providing input on areas such as cybersecurity, privacy, and identity management. He also works with NIST Director Patrick Gallagher on IT-related standards issues.
Schwartz came to NIST in August, 2010, after serving almost 13 years as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT). He also worked to improve privacy protections in the digital age and expand access to government information via the Internet.

In 2006, he won the RSA award for Excellence in Public Policy for his work building the ASCand other efforts against spyware. Aaron has over 15 years global consulting and industry experience, including several years in each of Europe, Australia and the U.S. Aaron also held interim CISO roles for two companies to help stabilize their information security programs and provide roadmaps for future improvements.

Heather West is a policy analyst at the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT). She leads CDT’s work on digital identity. Her work also focuses on e-government and consumer privacy.

Mike is the president of Fresh Consulting, a digital media agency based in Bellevue, WA that specializes in collaboration technologies.
Prior to Fresh, Mike began his professional career with WordPerfect Corporation leading a multinational development team in building the first release of WordPerfect Office in a handful of Germanic languages. His project management and sales leadership continued delivering high-value results for Novell, Intel, Fujitsu, Compuware, AT&T Wireless, QWest, T-Mobile, Boeing Space & Defense and Unisys Corporation.
Mike’s experience in sales resulted in multi-million dollar relationships with major firms in the Pacific Northwest including Boeing, Standard Insurance, Washington Mutual and States of Oregon and Washington. While at Comsys, he managed a high-tech sales team to become the top gross-margin performing office in the country. Steve is a founder and regular contributor to Tech.pinions, a web site of technology industry analysis and opinion. He also writes regularly for Cisco Newsroom and others and consults for major technology companies. He wrote BusinessWeek’s Technology & You column from its creation in 1994 until BusinessWeek’s acquisition by Bloomberg in December, 2009. The goal of the column, which appeared weekly in print at at BusinessWeek.com, was to help readers understand and use personal technology to enhance their jobs and their lives.
Before starting Technology & You, Steve served as senior news editor in BusinessWeek’s Washington bureau and edited the Washington Outlook column. Since joining the magazine in 1972, he has served in variety of capacities, covering politics, economics, and labor in Washington and Detroit and was also deeply involved in the computerization of editorial operations in the 1980s. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery.
Steve also has deep interests in education and the arts. He is a founding board member and secretary of the Children’s Chorus of Washington. Future of Privacy Forum
Christopher Wolf is the co-chair of the Future of Privacy Forum. He is also a partner in the Washington, DC office of Hogan Lovells LLP, where he is a leader of that firm’s privacy practice group.
As the ability to collect, store, share and transfer personal information over the Internet increased, privacy became the main focus of his law practice. Christopher became known as a pioneer in privacy law too. It was for that reason that the prestigious Practising Law Institute (PLI) tapped him to be editor and lead author of its first-ever treatise on privacy law. He also is co-editor of the PLI book, “A Practical Guide to the Red Flag Rules”, the identity theft prevention regulations issued by theFTC and financial regulators.
He is a 1980 magna cum laude, Order of the Coif graduate of the law school at the Washington & Lee University School of Law and a 1976 cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College. He also attended the London School of Economics and completed its General Course in 1975. Following law school, he was a law clerk to United States District Judge Aubrey E. Robinson, Jr. in Washington, D.C. He has served as an adjunct law professor on Internet and privacy law, and is a frequent lecturer in continuing legal education programs on the subject.

Paola is a member of the legal department at Symantec, the fourth-largest independent software company in the world. In her role as director of global privacy, she supports Symantec businesses and functions with legal advice on global privacy issues and she oversees Symantec’s global privacy program.
Paola has been working on privacy issues for more than 10 years, first in Europe with the implementation of the E.U. Directives for HP and Agilent Technologies, and later in the U.S. as global privacy lead for Agilent Technologies.
She has a law degree from the Catholic University of Milan and a LLM in U.S. Law from the University of Santa Clara. She is member of the IAPP, was admitted to practice in Italy, and is now a member of the California Bar.
